Brenda and Henry Outlaw asked us over for dinner in Merigold on Wednesday so we could all go hear Mose Allison's free concert at Delta State's performing arts center. Little did I know that "Po' Monkey" of Po' Monkey's Lounge would be at the Outlaw's for dinner too! He was called "Mr. Monkey" by his friends at the table. His juke joint sits on a rise in the flat delta land, and he said he'd been "lucky so far" in that tornados went right and left of it, but the juke joint still stands.
Here is the Blues Marker in front of Po Monkey's.
Henry is an all around guy, generous friend, and local historian as well as biochemist, and he took us out to see Po Monkey's the next day. Note to Mr. Monkey: I am yearning to play at your Lounge. Mose Allison was cool too! Sang and played on a grand piano, many of his dry, droll jazzy songs that were funnier than ever. Thanks to the generosity of his family and Delta State for sponsoring Mose Allison.
