Della Davidson public school, in Oxford over near the convention center, is brand new, fresh and full of hope. Even the blue, red, yellow and white hopscotch pattern of linoleum tiles on the floor was polished to a high gloss.
Thanks to teacher Anita Havens for getting us there. "Us" being actress and storyteller Rebecca Jernigan and me. We performed "The Legend of Robert Johnson at the Crossroads" funded by the Mississippi Humanities Council, for about 170 4th and 5 grade students.
After Rebecca tells the story with me playing slide, then she reads it and I sign it in ASL. Normally I teach a few signs at the beginning. Well, this audience signed the entire story with me.
The students sat neatly on the auditorium floor. They were at an age where they were open and fascinated by everything, the story, the costumes, the guitar, the signs, and not least of all, my sequin T top on which the sequins could be brushed face up being black or face down being silver.
Soon, they had me writing their names in sequins.
Met many awesome people including Assistant Principal Yolanda Underwood who showed her support of arts in the schools by being an enthusiastic audience member, and by speaking to us afterward.
